“The Rich Get Richer, The Poor Get Poorer”

“The first step towards getting somewhere is to decide that you are not going to stay where you are”

Although I  believe that the government and large corporations play a primary role in the growing gap of inequality, lack of jobs, and destruction of our environment, I feel it would be naive to think that it’s all their fault. I personally believe that some of the blame must rest on the shoulders of the people living in our society who just sit back, watch, and do nothing to eliminate what has been deemed as an ongoing dilemma in the United States for hundreds of years. According to Yvon Chouinard, author of, “Let My People Go Surfing,” the government and large corporations can do good things for our society while making a profit without losing their soul. Chouinard argues that while major institutions do such things as produce food, cure disease, control population and employ people, they also are the enemies of nature, (poisoning the earth with toxic waste from factories) culture vultures, (destroying native cultures) and stealing from the poor to give to the rich. For Chouinard, the solution to the world’s problems is easy. He believes that we as a people should do as Mahatma Gandhi famously quoted: “We must be the change that we wish to see in the world.” In other words, We-the-people must take action instead of waiting for somebody else to do something.
